The most popular upgrade in 2018 may be the short-distance detector bundle.  Short Channels enable the measurement of superficial noise, which when treated properly, can greatly increase your signal quality.

The NIRx Short Channel bundle splits a single detector into 8 short channels. These short-channels may be placed anywhere on a single NIRScap.

Detector Upgrade: Avalanche Photodiodes (APDs)

 

Avalanche Photodiodes are possibly the most significant upgrade that can be made to an fNIRS device.  The APDs are highly more sensitive to detecting photons.  This not only can increase the Signal to Noise Ratio of the data, but also greatly decreases setup time.  This is most notable on subject's with thick, dark hair.

Spring-Loaded Grommets

 

The spring-loaded grommets have been a major innovation to reduce setup time and increase data quality.  The below pictures show how they retain your optodes:

The optodes can compress until their tips are flush with the spring grommet RING on the inside of the cap, maximizing comfort.  

 The optodes also protude several mm beyond the spring grommet RING, maximizing data quality and speed of setup by allowing the optode tip to better achieve skin contact through hair follicles.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Upgrading to spring-loaded grommets offers a couple of key advantages:

1. Setup time
As you can see from the video to the right, a setup, even on subject with thick, black hair, can go incredibly quickly with the spring-loaded grommets.  


2. Data quality
The optode tips can make much better contact with the scalp with use of the spring loaded grommets on subjects with thicker hair.  This greatly improves data quality!
